Did you know that in general, every flower arrangement follows one of the seven basic patterns? The types of arrangements for blossoms differ according to the shape of the arrangements, the focal point, and the kind of filler used.

1. Vertical Flower Arrangement

This flower arrangement type signifies power and strength by using blooms with high stems and leaves like tulips, carnations, and roses. The focal point of vertical arrangements is near the rim or top of the flowers. To add an element of height in the arrangement, tall fillers such as twigs, thistles, and cattails are used. Shorter fillers like forget-me-nots are added to balance the flower arrangement.

2. Horizontal Arrangement

Typically used as centerpieces for table decorations, horizontal flower arrangements are much lower than vertical arrangements. The flowers are placed in a shallow container and are supported by foam with anchor pins. The focal point is one big flower that is inserted in the middle of the flower arrangement.

3. Circular Arrangement

The circular arrangement follows the natural placement of flowers, making it the most pleasant to the eye and one of the easiest to arrange. This type of floral arrangement is typically seen on conference and buffet tables.

4. Oval Arrangement

Often used in formal functions, the oval flower arrangement is a variation of the circular design with a one-sided and symmetrical style. The pointed oval style forms either an elongated shape or a teardrop shape.

5. Triangular Arrangement

The focal point of a triangular arrangement is a tall flower stem surrounded by filler flowers that follow a triangular shape. Triangular arrangements are commonly seen in ceremonies and formal settings. The two types of triangular arrangement are symmetrical and asymmetrical. The symmetrical design looks more formal because of its three equal sides, while the asymmetrical design looks more casual because of its unequal sides.

6. Fan-Shaped Arrangement

In this arrangement type, flowers have more width than height. Gladiolus, esters, and other flowers with long and strong stems are used for this floral design. Suitable for dining tables, buffet tables, and hotel rooms, fan-shaped arrangements have vibrant and big flowers as the focal point. To balance the appearance, smaller flowers in lighter shades are arranged on the exterior areas.

7. Lazy S or Hogarth’s Curve

Forming an S shape, this type is the most complex and difficult to arrange among the flower arrangements. Only a professional and trained florist can arrange flowers in Hogarth’s curve.
